Qigong for Children with Autism
Qigong: A Gentle and Holistic Approach
Qigong, an ancient Chinese practice, combines gentle movements, deep breathing, and focused intention to promote harmony and balance within the body and mind.
Qigong Sensory Treatment
Qigong Sensory Treatment (QST) is an evidence-based form of touch therapy co-developed by Louisa Silva, MD and Anita Cignolini, MD. QST incorporates elements and principles of Qigong but looks different than a standard Qigong practice. Our occupational therapist, Suzy, instructs parents in this effective 15-minute touch therapy, which is then performed daily by the parent(s). QST is performed through the clothes, using gentle patting or tapping along acupressure lines. This gentle method assists in normalizing sensory issues, decreasing symptoms, promoting overall childhood development, and improving life outcomes. QST helps children with autism feel more comfortable and connected.
In 15 research studies, QST has been shown to substantially reduce the severity of symptoms related to autism. After five months of treatment:
Sensory problems improved by 38% and touch improved by 49%.
Autistic behavior was reduced by 32%.
Social skills improved and children were more affectionate.
Receptive language improved.
There was a 44% decrease in parental stress.
After two years of treatment:
There was a 100% recovery of the sense of touch.
The average decrease in autism severity was 44%.
Over 50% of high-functioning children moved off the spectrum.
